Set up your email in Mail on a Mac
Add your work email to the Mail app on a MacBook or iMac.
About five minutes. You will need your email address and password, and the settings from Your email settings.
Steps
- Open Mail.
- Go to Mail ‚Üí Add Account in the menu bar. If this is your first account, the window appears on its own.
- Choose Other Mail Account at the bottom, then Continue.
- Fill in your name, full email address and password, then click Sign In.
- Mail will report that it cannot verify the account name or password. That is expected — it does not know the server yet. The window expands to ask for it.
- Fill in:
- Account Type: IMAP
- Incoming Mail Server:
imap.yourdomain.com - Outgoing Mail Server:
smtp.yourdomain.com
- Click Sign In.
- Choose which apps to use with the account — Mail is enough — and click Done.
Confirm the ports
Mail usually gets these right on its own, but it is worth checking:
- Mail ‚Üí Settings ‚Üí Accounts ‚Üí your account
- Under Server Settings, untick Automatically manage connection settings for both incoming and outgoing.
- Incoming should be port
993with TLS/SSL ticked. - Outgoing should be port
465with TLS/SSL ticked and Authentication set to Password. - Click Save.
Check it worked
Send yourself an email from another account and reply to it.
If it does not work
Mail says the account name or password is incorrect, repeatedly
At step 5 this is normal and you can continue. If it persists after entering the server names, the password is wrong — check it in a plain text document first.
Outgoing server shows as offline
Go to Mail ‚Üí Settings ‚Üí Accounts ‚Üí your account ‚Üí Server
Settings, and check the outgoing server is smtp.yourdomain.com and not
"None".
